12 days Kenya birding safari takes 11nights/12days of exploring the amazing birds in Kenya in the different habitats. Your birding expedition includes visit to Karanga Valley, Maasai Mara National Reserve, Lake Naivasha, Lake Baringo, Kakamega forest and more. On your birding expedition in Kenya, expect to keep an eye on a range of birds such as verreaux’s eagle owls, pelicans, flamingos, trogons, francolins, weaver birds, sunbirds to mention but a few.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Travel to Thika
After breakfast, travel to Thika and settle for lunch plus overnight at the lodge at Mt. Kenya slopes characterized by dense forests. As you chill at the balcony of your lodge, keep an eye in the different birds such white starred forest robin, silvery cheeked hornbills, Ruppell’s robin chat, Mountain greenbul, Verreaux’s eagle owl, olive and bronze napped pigeons and more.
Day 2&3: Lake Naivasha birding expedition
With a pack of lunch box, leave for your next birding tour to Lake Naivasha through the Thompsons Falls and the Rift Valley area. The Thompson Falls is a remarkable birding haven of its own and after identifying lots of its birds, proceed to Lake Naivasha for an afternoon boat ride excursion to enjoy sight of interesting birds. Lake Naivasha bird sighting will include the Narina trogon, the lesser and greater flamingos, arrow marked babbler, great white pelicans, dusky nightjars, black winged stilt, montane and dusky nightjar, francolins, etc.
Day 4 to 5: Birding in Baringo
At your accommodation, enjoy breakfast and exit early for great birding expedition on the Great Rift Valley. Sight some of the greater kudus around Lake Bogoria hot springs and during a boat ride, sight several aquatic life including crocodiles, hippos, birds. The expected bird sightings will include bristle crowned starlings, dark chanting goshawk, verreaux’s eagles, Jackson’s and yellow billed hornbills, sunbirds, morning thrush, goliath herons, eagle owl, grey headed bush shrike, fish eagle, Northern red bishops and more.
Day 6 to 7: Kakamega bird watching trip
Enjoy two days birding expedition at Kakamega, with birds expected to sight ranging from black weavers, black and white casqued hornbills, Joyful greenbul, emerald cuckoo, great blue turacos, blue headed bee-eaters, Chubb cisticola, honeyguide greenbul, yellow bellied wattle eye and more.
Day 8 to 11: Birding in Masai Mara
Enjoy 3 days exploring the spectacular Masai Mara National Reserve a home to about 500 bird species and a range of wildlife including big five, wildebeests, etc. During your birding expedition, expect great bird sightings including the saddle billed stork, hooded vultures, tabora cisticola, yellow throated sandgrouse, Egyptian vultures, ashy flycatcher, open billed storks, paradise flycatcher, red throated tit, Ruppell’s griffon vulture, red fronted barbets, etc.
Day 12: Departure
After breakfast, set off on a game drive which comes with great animal and bird sightings of Masai Mara National Reserve as you exit. Proceed to Nairobi capital 5-6 hours’ drive journey in a 4x4 drive vehicle with pop-up roof and today marks the end of 12 days Kenya birding safari.
