Overview

4 days Uganda birding (Murchison Falls NP) takes 4days/3nights introducing you to the leading safari park in Uganda- Murchison Falls National Park. Located 6 hours’ drive from Kampala, Northwestern Uganda, Murchison Falls National Park is a home to about 451 bird species which include the open billed storks, bishops, black bellied bustards, secretary birds, shoebill stork and more.

Other bird species include Abyssinian ground hornbill, red throated bee-eater, swamp flycatcher, black headed gonoleks, goliath herons, pelicans, flamingos, grey heron, francolins, black bee-eaters, woodpeckers, woodland kingfishers, swallow tailed bee-eaters and others.

A huge profusion of wildlife also resides in Murchison Falls National Park including mammals such as elephants, lions, Jackson’s hartebeests, waterbucks, buffaloes, chimpanzees, giraffes, warthogs, kobs, oribis, etc.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Budongo Forest- birding tour

Early transfer to Budongo Forest a natural forest with about 360 bird species. The journey to Budongo covers 4-5 hours and lunch will be served in Masindi town then drive via the Southern gate. Budongo harbors birds such as fork tailed drongo, olive breasted greenbul, yellow footed flycatchers, yellow crested woodpecker, black eared ground thrush, white thighed hornbill, crowned eagle, yellow spotted barbet, parmoptila woodhouse, African emerald cuckoo, Cassin’s spine tail, black winged red bishop, dwarf kingfisher, etc.

Budongo Forest also inhabits butterflies, diversity of primate species such as the red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, chimpanzees, grey cheeked mangabeys, colobus monkeys and more.

Day 2: Royal Mile birding & drive to Northern sector of Murchison Falls

An early delicious breakfast, after which you go to Budongo Forest to meet your bird guide to lead you through the forest for bird sighting. The expected birds include Nahan’s francolins, Sabine’s spinetail, Uganda woodland warblers, yellow browed camaroptera, black billed turacos, white thighed hornbill, Ituri batis, yellow billed, red tailed bristle bill, forest robin, fork tailed drongo, olive breasted greenbul, yellow footed flycatchers, yellow crested woodpecker, black eared ground thrush, crowned eagle, yellow spotted barbet, parmoptila woodhouse, African emerald cuckoo, etc.

After long hours of birding in Budongo, settle for lunch and then transfer to the Northern side of Murchison Falls National Park. The sector is endowed with not only birds, but also large mammals such as elephants, buffaloes, leopards, lions, etc.

Day 3: Northern Murchison Falls NP birding tour

Begin your day with breakfast, morning birding trip will start via the Northern trail and then a boat cruise in the afternoon and expect to see more than birds. The birds to sight on Murchison birding tour include red throated bee-eaters, white rumped seed-eater, Bruce’s green pigeon, speckle fronted weavers, yellow flanked barbet, shoebill stork, long toed lapwing, osprey, Senegal thick-knee, Abyssinian rollers, African open billed stork and more. Afternoon boat cruise will be done on Victoria Nile up to the base of Murchison Falls for 2-3 hours and your interest will be aquatic birds.

Day 4: Depart from Murchison to Kampala/Entebbe

Enjoy early breakfast, then drive to the top of the falls for photography and later proceed to Kampala city. En-route, enjoy great sights of wildlife plus birds and you will reach Kampala early afternoon.
